New recommendation by the German Society of Hygiene and Hospital Hygiene (DGKH) for the cases of drinking water systemic contamination with coliforms.

The German Society for General and Hospital Hygiene (DGKH) recommends specific measures for hospitals and the general population in the event of a systemic drinking water contamination with coliform bacteria. Hospitals should conduct microbiological tests with increased sample volume (1 L) to confirm possible contamination and to perform a differentiation of coliforms, including antibiotic resistance testing. This can serve as a monitoring measure and contribute to the safety of the population. For particularly vulnerable groups, such as patients with immunosuppression, catheters, or wounds, strict hygiene measures, such as the use of point of use water filters or boiled water, are necessary to prevent infections from contaminated water.
